Boy in the ambulance: shocking image emerges of Syrian child pulled from Aleppo rubble

Boy in ambulance in SyriaA photograph of a boy sitting dazed and bloodied in the back of an ambulance after surviving a regime airstrike in Aleppo has highlighted the desperation of the Syrian civil war and the struggle for control of the city.

The child has been identified as five-year-old Omran Daqneesh, who was injured late on Wednesday in a military strike on the rebel-held Qaterji neighbourhood.

Boko Haram releases video of kidnapped girlsThe Nigerian government has said it is in contact with Boko Haram after the armed group released a new video purporting to show the schoolgirls it kidnapped more than two years ago, and offering to trade the captives in return for the release of its jailed fighters.

Boko Haram released the video on Sunday showing dozens of the 276 students they seized from the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok on the night of April 14, 2014. Fifty-seven managed to escape in the immediate aftermath of the mass abduction.

Hamas prisoners end hunger strikeMore than 200 Hamas-affiliated Palestinian prisoners have halted their hunger strike after reaching a deal with Israeli prison authorities to end body searches and improve prison conditions, the Gaza-based Prisoner's Media Office said.

The group published what it said was the terms of the agreement on Saturday. The deal reportedly includes an end to strip searches and other types of invasive body checks that are considered "humiliating", improving ventilation in prisons and reducing overcrowding in cells, among other issues.

Baghdad Bombings Kill 25 And Wound Dozens More

Baghdad bombingsTwo suicide bombings that killed about 25 people in Baghdad on Thursday were claimed by Islamic State, whose stronghold of Falluja near the capital is surrounded by Iraqi forces which are now advancing on the city.

The ultra-hardline Sunni insurgents said one attack was carried out with a car laden with explosives and the second with an explosive vest.

Syria conflict: Hospitals hit in Aleppo air strike

Aleppo hospitals hitAt least 15 people are reported to have been killed and dozens wounded in a series of air strikes on rebel-held areas in the Syrian city of Aleppo.

Three medical facilities were hit in the space of three hours, the UN says. One of the hospitals targeted is one of the few that still provide paediatric services. Medics have had to take babies out of incubators, the UN says.

Another strike hit near the Bayan hospital in the eastern Shaar district, activists and a monitoring group said.

Iraqis drown fleeing from FellujahSeveral Iraqi civilians fleeing fighting in the city of Fallujah have drowned in the Euphrates River while attempting to cross to safety into government-controlled areas.

Thousands of civilians are caught in the crossfire in and around Fallujah, controlled by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, or ISIS) group, as government forces and allied militias are trying to recapture the city.

Obama arrives in Vietnam to start three-day visit

Obama arrives in VietnamU.S. President Barack Obama arrived in Vietnam on Sunday for a three-day trip aimed at strengthening defense and economic ties with a former enemy that has become a key focus of Washington's Asia "rebalance" strategy.

Obama's jet, Air Force One, arrived late in the evening in the capital Hanoi, where he will meet the communist country's leadership triumvirate of party chief, president and prime minister.
