Gitmo abuse blamed for weight loss

GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba (AP) -- An Afghan prisoner suffered significant weight loss and other health problems when the military subjected him to two weeks of sleep deprivation at Guantanamo in 2004, his lawyer said Friday.

Mohammed Jawad lost 10 percent of his body weight and told doctors he was urinating blood after guards subjected him to the sleep deprivation program, Air Force Maj. David Frakt, his Pentagon-appointed lawyer, said, citing records from the prison on a U.S. base in Cuba.

U.S. Okayed Korean War Massacres

The American colonel, troubled by what he was hearing, tried to stall at first. But the declassified record shows he finally told his South Korean counterpart it "would be permitted" to machine-gun 3,500 political prisoners, to keep them from joining approaching enemy forces.

In the early days of the Korean War, other American officers observed, photographed and confidentially reported on such wholesale executions by their South Korean ally, a secretive slaughter believed to have killed 100,000 or more leftists and supposed sympathizers, usually without charge or trial, in a few weeks in mid-1950.

The two Israels

In the heart of a city with 160,000 Palestinians, Israel maintains a Jewish settlement with 800 people. To protect them, the Israeli military has established a massive system of guard posts, checkpoints and road closures since 2001.

More than 1,800 Palestinian shops have closed and several thousand people have been driven from their homes. The once flourishing gold market is now blocked with barbed wire and choked with weeds.

"For years, Israel has severely oppressed Palestinians living in the center of the city," notes B'Tselem, the Israeli human rights group, in a recent report.

AP IMPACT: Kenyan children abducted, tortured

BUNGOMA, Kenya — Dozens of scared children filed silently into the bare room, their eyes on the cracks in the floor. One by one, in low voices, they told of being tortured by the Kenyan army because they were suspected of aiding rebels. They told of being beaten and made to shake hands with corpses. They told of being forced to crawl through barbed wire tunnels and of genitals squeezed by pliers.

Then the children took off their shirts. White scars crisscrossed the dark skin on their backs like grains of rice. Some were still bleeding.

Law School to Plan Bush War Crimes Prosecution

A conference to plan the prosecution of President Bush and other high administration officials for war crimes will be held September 13-14 at the Massachusetts School of Law at Andover .

"This is not intended to be a mere discussion of violations of law that have occurred," said convener Lawrence Velvel, dean and cofounder of the school. "It is, rather, intended to be a planning conference at which plans will be laid and necessary organizational structures set up, to pursue the guilty as long as necessary and, if need be, to the ends of the Earth."

Detainees learned to hate the U.S.

In a classified 2005 review of 35 detainees released from Guantanamo, Pakistani police intelligence concluded that the men -- the majority of whom had been subjected to "severe mental and physical torture," according to the report -- had "extreme feelings of resentment and hatred against USA."

"A lot of our friends are working against the Americans now, because if you torture someone without any reason, what do you expect?"

America's prison for terrorists often held the wrong men

An eight-month McClatchy investigation in 11 countries on three continents has found that Akhtiar was one of dozens of men — and, according to several officials, perhaps hundreds — whom the U.S. has wrongfully imprisoned in Afghanistan, Cuba and elsewhere on the basis of flimsy or fabricated evidence, old personal scores or bounty payments.
