Jury acquits former Marine in killing of Iraqis

A former Marine accused of killing unarmed Iraqi detainees was acquitted of voluntary manslaughter Thursday in a first-of-its-kind federal trial.

The jury took six hours to find Jose Luis Nazario Jr. not guilty of charges that he killed or caused others to kill four unarmed detainees on Nov. 9, 2004, in Fallujah, Iraq, during some of the fiercest fighting of the war.

Army Hopes Dropouts Can Fill Gaps

But the U.S. Army, eager to fill its ranks amid wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, doesn't see them as dropouts. They are recruits who only need a GED before they're ready to begin basic training.

And so, the Army formally opens its first prep school Wednesday.

TVNL Comment: Dropouts = America's heros.

Witnesses ID three in Iraq detainee deaths

During some seven hours of sworn testimony, soldiers who were on the patrol suggested that the four soldiers charged with conspiracy to commit premeditated murder  — Staff Sgt. Jess Cunningham, Sgt. Charles Quigley, Spc. Stephen Ribordy and Spc. Belmor Ramos — had either minor roles or no role at all in the deaths, but may have been involved in the alleged cover-up.

Evoy said that when Hatley and Mayo told him they were going to shoot the detainees, he didn’t believe they meant it.

But as he watched the three men from his Bradley, he saw Leahy shoot one of the Iraqis with his handgun, and heard other shots, then dropped down into his vehicle in disbelief, he said.

Will the US Develop a Death Ray?

A band of pre-eminent scientists and war-fighters has concluded that the nation's military might isn't powerful enough for the 21st Century; and so the National Research Council (NRC), an independent, congressionally-chartered body charged with assessing scientific issues, is urging the Pentagon and Congress to get cracking on developing a weapon capable of hitting any target in the world within an hour of being launched.

TVNL Comment: "Pre-eminent scientists and war-fighters?" So who do these scientists work for or who would they work for if their recommendations were followed?  And what the hell is a "war-fighter?"

Military halts shipment of deadly toxins

Military leaders have suspended some activities at biological research laboratories to review safety rules for some of the world's deadliest germs and toxins, including how they are shipped through FedEx and other civilian carriers.

The Army has six, Navy five and Air Force two labs where biomedical research is done to support counterterrorism efforts, research protection for the armed forces and keep track of infectious diseases across the globe. Employees work with a range of dangerous materials such as anthrax and germs that cause Avian flu and encephalitis.

TVNL Comment: Who represents a threat to you? Who is developing bio-warfare weapons? Who creates viruses and bacteria that can potentially escape and perhaps kill us all? America, that's who. And these programs were stepped up dramatically under the Bush/Cheney/PNAC administration.

Ex-Marine decries prosecution in civilian court

A former Marine sergeant facing the first federal civilian prosecution of a military member accused of a war crime says there is much more at stake than his claim of innocence on charges that he killed unarmed detainees in Fallujah, Iraq.

In the view of Jose Luis Nazario Jr., U.S. troops may begin to question whether they will be prosecuted by civilians for doing what their military superiors taught them to do in battle.

Soldiers pay bag fee on travels to war

American Airlines is charging troops for their extra baggage, a practice that forces soldiers heading for a war zone in Iraq to try to get reimbursement from the military. One of the country's largest veterans groups is asking the aviation industry to drop the practice immediately.
