US judge blocks Trump administration from fast-tracking deportations

Judge MurphyA federal judge on Friday blocked U.S. President Donald Trump's administration from deporting migrants to countries with which they had no existing relationship without giving them a chance to raise claims that they would face persecution or torture if sent there.

U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy in Boston issued a nationwide temporary restraining order designed to protect migrants subject to final orders of removal from being swiftly deported to countries other than those that had already been identified during immigration proceedings.

His decision came in a lawsuit filed on Sunday by a group of migrants represented by immigrant rights advocates challenging a policy U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement recently adopted that is aimed at fast-tracking the deportations of thousands of migrants who had been previously released from detention.

Palestinians protest Hamas in a rare public show of dissent in Gaza

Gazans protest HamaThousands of Palestinians marched between the wreckage of a heavily destroyed town in northern Gaza on Wednesday in the second day of anti-war protests, with many chanting against Hamas in a rare display of public anger against the militant group.

The protests, which centered mainly on Gaza’s north, appeared to be aimed generally against the war, with protesters calling for an end to 17 months of deadly fighting with Israel that has made life in Gaza insufferable.

But protesters also leveled unusually direct and public criticism of Hamas, which has quashed dissent violently in the past in Gaza, a territory it still rules months into the war with Israel.

In the town of Beit Lahiya, where a similar protest took place Tuesday, about 3,000 people demonstrated, with many chanting “the people want the fall of Hamas.” In the hard-hit Shijaiyah neighborhood of Gaza City, dozens of men chanted “Out, out out! Hamas get out!”

Federal Judge Says Texas A&M Can Host Drag Show

Texas A&M

A federal judge has stopped Texas A&M’s board from banning drag shows on campus.

Lee H. Rosenthal, who was appointed as a federal judge by former President George H. W. Bush, wrote a Memorandum and Opinion on Monday that any student who finds the “Draggieland” performance “offensive has a simple remedy: don’t go.”

“The Board, and some members of the A&M community, are offended by the Draggieland performance,” Rosenthal wrote. “To ban the performance from taking place on campus because it offends some members of the campus community is precisely what the First Amendment prohibits.”

Trump Lobs Dodgy 'Conflict Of Interest' Accusation At Judge Who Tried To Halt Migrant Deportations

trump conflict photoPresident Donald Trump screamed “conflict of interest” while going after the judge who temporarily ordered he halt migrant deportations done under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798.

The chief executive continued his attacks on Judge James E. Boasberg in a Saturday night post on Truth Social, sharing a group photo that showed the jurist standing besides former Second Gentleman, Douglas Emhoff, and six other people.

The photo was simply from Boasberg and Emhoff’s time participating in the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Mock Trial in Washington, D.C., in 2022 and did nothing to indicate the duo knew each other outside of the event, in either a professional or social capacity.

Trump began to direct his ire at Boasberg last weekend, almost immediately after the judge ordered a flight deporting a group of Venezuelan immigrants to El Salvador to be stopped.re

IDF will seize Gaza land permanently until Hamas releases hostages, DM Katz says

Israeli DM Katz

The IDF will permanently seize parts of the Gaza Strip if Hamas doesn't release the hostages held in captivity, Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Friday.

"I have instructed the IDF to seize additional areas in Gaza, evacuate the population, and expand security zones around Gaza to protect Israeli communities and IDF soldiers. The more Hamas persists in its refusal to release the hostages, the more territory it will lose, which will be annexed to Israel," Katz said.

"If the hostages are not released, Israel will continue to take more and more territory in the Strip for permanent control," he concluded.

On Thursday, Katz approved the continuation of military operations in Gaza.

Katz highlighted the importance of continuing the military pressure on Gaza until the hostages are released.

Israeli strikes in Gaza kill 9, including aid workers and journalists, witnesses say

9 killed in GazaTwo back-to-back Israeli airstrikes in the northern Gaza city of Beit Lahiya killed at least nine people on Saturday, according to Gaza civil defense. Witnesses and Gaza health officials say several of those killed were aid workers and journalists.

The Israeli military says it was targeting two terrorists operating a drone in the area. In a statement, it says it hit those individuals, and then struck again when "a number of additional terrorists" collected the drone operating equipment and entered a vehicle.

But the head of Gaza civil defense, Mahmoud Basal, told NPR they were aid workers from the London-based Al-Khair Foundation, along with several journalists working with the group.

TVNL Comment:  This is so terrible.  There is no cease-fire, only attacks on unarmed Palestinians, no matter if they are aid workers and journalists.  Doing nothing is being complicit.  Think about that. Do something to stop this horror.

Arlington National Cemetery stops highlighting some historical figures on its website

Arlington

Arlington National Cemetery has begun wiping from its website histories highlighting Black, Hispanic and women veterans. The change is in line with President Trump's directive to remove references to and support for diversity, equity and inclusion from the federal government.

A U.S. official not authorized to talk to media told NPR the removal of links and sections about these groups have been dubbed a "digital content refresh" by top Pentagon officials.

The story was first reported by The Washington Post.

Articles, photos and videos that are seen as promoting DEI will be removed under the new approach.

TVNL Comment:  How shameful to promote 'Whites only' again.  It is embarrassing and shameful to be an American,  again.

Johns Hopkins University slashes 2,200 jobs as Trump cuts to research, USAID take hold

Johns Hopkins lays off 2200Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore said Thursday that it is laying off more than 2,200 people as a result of President Donald Trump's deep budget cuts, with another 100 furloughed on reduced schedules. It's the largest layoff in the university's history. Johns Hopkins was the largest university recipient of federal research funding, and is the largest employer in the state of Maryland.

“This is a difficult day for our entire community," a university spokesperson told USA TODAY. Affected workers will receive at least 60 days notice before the cuts take effect, the spokesperson said. Many of the jobs are in other countries, since the university specializes in USAID-funded research projects, which Trump has slashed.

The historic layoffs come as other universities are cutting spending, freezing hiring and in some cases rescinding admissions acceptance for graduate students as they face budget cuts from Trump and Congress.
