Zelensky sacks Ukraine's commander-in-chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi

Zelenskyy sacks top general

Ukraine's president has sacked the commander-in-chief of the country's armed forces, Valerii Zaluzhnyi.

It follows speculation about a rift between the president and Gen Zaluzhnyi, who has led Ukraine's war effort since the conflict began.

Battle-hardened Gen Oleksandr Syrskyi was announced as his replacement in a presidential decree.

It is the biggest change to Ukraine's military leadership since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said the high command needed to be "renewed" and that Gen Zaluzhnyi could "remain on the team".

Israel strikes southern Gaza as alarm grows over looming ground invasion of Rafah

Rafah bombingTwo women and five children were among at least 13 people killed as Israeli airstrikes pounded the city of Rafah on Gaza’s southern border, according to the hospital that received the corpses.

“I wish we could collect their whole bodies instead of just pieces,” said a neighbor, Mohammed Abu Habib, who witnessed the strike.

The overnight airstrikes came hours after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected a cease-fire proposal from the Palestinian militant group Hamas and said he would expand the offensive into Rafah.

The U.S. secretary of state, Antony Blinken, left Israel on Thursday as the divide grows between the two close allies on the way forward.

Israeli military opens probe into reports of Oct. 7 friendly fire deaths

Israeli house after Oct. atttack- Israel has begun investigating possible breaches of the law by its forces during the Hamas attack on Oct. 7, the military said on Tuesday, following reports some Israeli civilians may have been killed by friendly fire in the fighting.

The left-wing daily Haaretz said the investigation centred on an incident in Kibbutz Be'eri, one of the worst hit communities, in which a house was shelled by a tank, killing 12 Israeli hostages held by Palestinian Hamas gunmen.
It said the probe had been delayed due to the demands of the four-month-old war in Gaza but as fighting has slackened, army commanders felt the time had come for an investigation.

'Blatant assassination': Iraq livid with US after Baghdad drone strike

US kilss Hezbollah leader

The U.S. drone strike that killed an Iraqi-based militant leader was a "blatant assassination" that showed no regard for international law, the Iraqi government said Thursday.

The strike blew up a car in a Baghdad neighborhood late Wednesday, killing a commander of the Kataib Hezbollah militia responsible for planning and participating in attacks on American troops in the region, the U.S. military said. Major General Special Forces Yehia Rasool, spokesman for the Iraqi government, said the strike violated Iraqi sovereignty and showed disregard for the safety and lives of Iraqi civilians.

The U.S. has blamed the Iran-backed Islamic Resistance in Iraq for the attack in Jordan that killed three U.S. military personnel Jan. 28.

Russian drone and missile strikes on Ukrainian cities kill five and injure 50

Russian drone and missile strikes

A barrage of Russian drone and missile strikes on Ukrainian cities killed five people on Wednesday and injured 50 more, including a pregnant woman.

“It’s another massive attack against our state,” president Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in a statement.

Cities across Ukraine were hit, including the capital Kyiv, with Russia continuing regular assaults on Ukrainian cities as the two-year anniversary of the full-scale war approaches.

The assault came as Josep Borrell, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, was spending the night in Kyiv as part of a two-day visit to the capital to discuss EU support for Ukraine. “Starting my morning in the shelter as air alarms are sounding across Kyiv,” he wrote on X.

Netanyahu dismisses Hamas cease-fire offer as 'delusional'

Netanyahu dismisses Hamas dealIsraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed Wednesday the considerable concessions sought by Hamas leaders in their counter to the latest cease-fire proposal, saying surrendering to their demands would result in disaster for his country.

A "crushing" military victory over the "delusional" militants can be obtained within months, Netanyahu said at a news conference. “We are on the way to complete victory, the victory is within reach,” he said. "The 'day after' is the day after Hamas."

Hamas had proposed a 135-day cease-fire plan that would include the release of the remaining hostages, withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip and an end to a war that has killed tens of thousands and left the enclave in ruins.
