Alina Habba not retained by federal judges as US attorney for New Jersey

Alina HabbaJudges on the U.S. District Court of New Jersey have declined to retain President Trump’s pick for the state’s top federal prosecutor, Alina Habba, as the clock on her interim status runs out.

In a terse standing order, the court tapped attorney Desiree Leigh Grace to lead the office hours before the expiration of Habba’s 120-day temporary term. The appointment is effective as of Tuesday, according to the order signed by U.S. District Judge Renée Marie Bumb, the district’s chief judge.

Habba, who served as a personal lawyer for Trump, assumed the role in March. Her profile as a staunch defender of the president in the courtroom and the press was raised while representing him in his business fraud case and the defamation and sexual assault lawsuits brought by advice columnist E. Jean Carroll.

Early in her interim term, her leadership came under scrutiny following the arrests and charges against Newark, N.J., Mayor Ras Baraka (D) and Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-N.J.) stemming from an incident at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility.

Although a trespass counresisting, impeding and interfering with federal officers.t against Baraka was dropped, McIver is still fighting her criminal charges in court. She has pleaded not guilty to three counts of assaulting, resisting, impeding and interfering with federal officers.

NATO countries promise more weapons for Ukraine as Russia launches massive assault

ATtack on KyivNick Schifrin: In Ukraine's capital today, damage, destruction and more death. It's days like this where nowhere feels safe, not the Kyiv apartment building hit by a Russian drone, the schoolkid's bedroom inside burnt black.

Not the nearby kindergarten engulfed in flames. Not the bomb shelter otherwise known as the metro, where a drone hit at the entrance and filled the tunnel built to withstand nuclear blasts with smoke, the metro usually where Ukrainians spend the night to protect their children.

But, these days, there is precious little protection; 46-year-old Vadym Volkov survived, where his apartment did not.

Trump bans Wall Street Journal from Scotland trip press pool over Epstein report

WSJ reporters kicked outA Wall Street Journal reporter was kicked out of Donald Trump’s press pool for his upcoming weekend trip to Scotland. The removal marked increased retaliation after the newspaper published an article alleging the US president sent Jeffrey Epstein a 50th birthday letter that included a drawing of a naked woman. The US president promptly sued the paper for $10bn.

“As the appeals court confirmed, the Wall Street Journal or any other news outlet are not guaranteed special access to cover President Trump in the Oval Office, aboard Air Force One, and in his private workspaces,” said White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, in a statement. “Thirteen diverse outlets will participate in the press pool to cover the President’s trip to Scotland. Due to the Wall Street Journal’s fake and defamatory conduct, they will not be one of the thirteen outlets on board."

Trump’s border czar to target sanctuary cities in US: ‘We’re gonna flood the zone’

Border CZar HonanThe Trump administration is targeting sanctuary cities in the next phase of its deportation drive after labelling them “sanctuaries for criminals” following the shooting of an off-duty law enforcement officer in New York City, allegedly by an undocumented person with a criminal record.

His pledge followed the arrest of two undocumented men from the Dominican Republic after a Customs and Border Protection officer suffered gunshot wounds to the arm and face in an apparent robbery attempt in New York’s Riverside park on Saturday night.

New York is one of several self-designated “sanctuary cities” across the US, called so because the mayors and local councils have prevented law officers under their control from collaborating with federal immigration officers working on Trump’s mass deportation scheme.

Ex-officer sentenced to nearly three years for role in Breonna Taylor’s killing

Breonna TaylorA federal judge on Monday sentenced an ex-Kentucky police officer to nearly three years in prison for using excessive force during the 2020 deadly raid on Breonna Taylor’s home, declining a justice department recommendation that he be given no prison time.

Brett Hankison, who fired 10 shots during the raid but didn’t hit anyone, was the only officer on the scene charged in the Black woman’s death. He is the first person sentenced to prison in the case that rocked the city of Louisville and spawned weeks of street protests over police brutality five years ago.

Last week, the justice department recommended a one-day jail sentence and supervised release in Hankison’s case. In a sentencing memorandum, assistant attorney general for civil rights Harmeet K Dhillon and senior counsel Robert J Keenan said Hankison had suffered psychological stress from the legal battle.

Trump administration withdraws 700 Marines from Los Angeles

More Marines leave LAThe Pentagon continued its withdrawal of troops sent to Los Angeles as part of President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration, ordering 700 Marines back to their base.

Monday’s move follows a similar drawdown last week of 2,000 National Guard soldiers from Los Angeles.

Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had ordered thousands of National Guard and the active-duty Marines to Los Angeles after some protests against immigration enforcement became violent in June. The Guardsmen had protected Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers who were rounding immigrants suspected of being inside the United States illegally. Marines protected federal property.

The deployments came despite opposition from California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, both Democrats, who said local law enforcement officials had control of the protests.
