The Air Force stated the launch of the reusable Boeing X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle is not a segue into militarizing space. The unmanned space shuttle will be controlled from the ground to conduct experiments in space. The secrecy about the innovative rocket makes its null purposes seem irrelevant.
Stating the craft is only to be used for experimental purposes saves pertinent information from getting into the hands of space rivals, or combative nations. The mystery is perhaps annoying to American tax payers however. Especially if the Boeing X-37's purpose is going to be intrusive or altogether pointless.
The space craft can stay in orbit for an estimated 270 days, but yesterday's launch didn't specify this current mission's time frame. Once the mission is complete, the space shuttle will land autonomously.
"This launch helps ensure that our warfighters will be provided the capabilities they need in the future," as stated by Col. Andre Lovett in the Huffington Post, a launch official and vice commander of the Air Force's 45th Space Wing.
