INAUGURATION IN WONDERLAND!

For George Bush is in his own Wonderland, and sees what he wants to see. In this fantasy world, no one questions and no one challenges. In this imaginary world, he has a mandate to continue his personal wars with impunity.
But what pleases him most is that no one is ever held accountable.
This past Sunday, the following paragraphs appeared in the Washington Post:
President Bush said the public's decision to reelect him was a ratification of his approach toward Iraq and that there was no reason to hold any administration officials accountable for mistakes or misjudgments in prewar planning or managing the violent aftermath.
"We had an accountability moment, and that's called the 2004 elections," Bush said in an interview with The Washington Post. "The American people listened to different assessments made about what was taking place in Iraq, and they looked at the two candidates, and chose me.”
This coming Thursday, the man who made these remarks will be sworn in for a second term as President of these United States. In a rational world, that wouldn’t make any sense at all. But in these illogical times, all things are possible.
Let’s get this straight, so there’s no misunderstanding. President Bush claims that his re-election is a call for full absolution for him and his entire administration for all the death and destruction and chaos they have caused in Iraq. He insists the American people now hold no one accountable for any errors of judgment or planning that resulted in the greatest foreign policy blunder in recent history.
Think about that. No one at all is responsible for the deceptions, the distortions, the fabrications, and the outright lies that led to the war against Iraq. No one at all can be held responsible for the lack of planning, for refusing to listen to the experts, and for invading a sovereign nation on false premises in defiance of international law.
Let’s get it really straight. Despite acknowledging mistakes or misjudgments in prewar planning or managing the violent aftermath….no one may be held accountable. Somewhere in all this, all logic disappears, and an aura of the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party emerges:
Only in some absurd and eccentric other world would George W. Bush and his cohorts not be held accountable for their actions. Only in some irrational and illusory Wonderland would no one cry out at the outrageous assertions that:
No one may be held accountable for the countless lies that led to war..
No one may be held accountable for the billions of dollars spent on a war of choice.
No one may be held accountable for the lies told to the United Nations.
No one may be held accountable for the rush to war before inspectors could do their job.
No one may be held accountable for connecting Iraq to the attacks of 9/11
No one may be held accountable for the deaths of over 1360 American troops.
No one may be held accountable for the deaths of over 160 coalition troops.
No one may be held accountable for the maiming of thousands of troops.
No one may be held accountable for the deaths of tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians.
No one may be held accountable for the kidnappings and beheadings.
No one may be held accountable for the destabilization of the country.
No one may be held accountable for not securing the pre-war freedoms of Iraqi women.
No one may be held accountable for the creation of a training ground for terrorists.
No one may be held accountable for being unable to win the hearts and minds of Iraqis.
No one may be held accountable for a war without a plan for making the peace.
No one may be held accountable for a war without an exit strategy.
So be it. No one is responsible. All is forgiven. There is no one to challenge the Hatter at his own party. He makes the rules no matter how bizarre. It’s his party, and he knows it. Let the revelry begin.
And, as Inauguration Week unfolds, George W. Bush will be in the limelight. He will be feted and toasted and applauded. He will be wined and dined and photographed. He will take the oath of office amid the usual splendor of a presidential inauguration. But at no time, will he be held accountable.
And all the while, distracted by the fanfare and the festivity, bombs will be exploding in Iraq. And all the while, with cries muffled by the sounds of celebration, people will be dying in George Bush’s war. And all the while, no one will be held accountable.
In his moment of glory, when George Bush gives his Inaugural Address, he will tell the world about the great gift of democracy he has given to the people of Iraq. He will not acknowledge the chaos that has enveloped their country, or of the continuing carnage that will not end.

A televisual fairyland - The US media is disciplined by corporate America into promoting the Republican cause - How did a fantasy president from a world of make believe come to govern a country whose power was built on hard-headed materialism?
