Al-Qaida says it killed Iraqi commander in Mosul

Police commander killed in MosulAn al-Qaida linked group has claimed responsibility for the killing of an Iraqi police commander in a raid by three suicide bombers who stormed a security building in Mosul.

Lt. Col. Shamil al-Jabouri had escaped five previous assassination attempts.But he was killed Wednesday morning when attackers wearing explosives vests slipped into the police compound.

One of the bombers made it into al-Jabouri's office where he was sleeping, and blew himself up.

Al-Qaida's affiliate known as the Islamic State of Iraq took responsibility for the attack in an Internet posting. It says al-Jabouri had been targeted several times but had not been deterred from fighting al-Qaida.

The message says: "This day was the decisive one."
