An anti-abortion bill that could potentially result in the closure of many of the state's abortion clinics passed the La. House Wednesday. Rep. Katrina Jackson’s (D-Monroe) HB 388, the “Unsafe Abortion Act,” passed a final House vote 88-5. The legislation now requires only Bobby Jindal’s signature to become law.
Represenatives Dixon, Hunter, Leger, Moreno, and Woodruff provided the only opposing votes. 11 legislators were absent. Gov. Bobby Jindal has already voiced his support.
Today’s vote specifically dealt with an amendment attached to the original house bill by the Senate and was largely a formality before sending the legislation to the Governor’s mansion.
Similar to the bill that sparked Texas Senator Wendy Davis’ famous filibuster, HB 388 includes prohibitive regulations on the state’s clinics. The bill requires all abortion providers to have admitting privileges to a hospital no more than 30 miles from where they are located.
