New Yorker bashes GW Bush's 'self-serving' book

New Yorker bashes Bush's bookHere is a prediction: “Decision Points” will not endure. Its prose aims for tough-minded simplicity but keeps landing on simpleminded sententiousness. Though Bush credits no collaborator, his memoirs read as if they were written by an admiring sidekick who is familiar with every story Bush ever told but never got to know the President well enough to convey his inner life.

Very few of its four hundred and ninety-three pages are not self-serving. Bush, honing his executive skills as part owner of the Texas Rangers, decides to fire his underperforming manager, Bobby Valentine: “I tried to deliver the news in a thoughtful way, and Bobby handled it like a professional. I was grateful when, years later, I heard him say, ‘I voted for George W. Bush, even though he fired me.’

George Bush Book 'Decision Points' Lifted From Advisers' Books

Bush Book lifted from other sourcesWhen Crown Publishing inked a deal with George W. Bush for his memoirs, the publisher knew it wasn't getting Faulkner. But the book, at least, promises "gripping, never-before-heard detail" about the former president's key decisions, offering to bring readers "aboard Air Force One on 9/11, in the hours after America's most devastating attack since Pearl Harbor; at the head of the table in the Situation Room in the moments before launching the war in Iraq," and other undisclosed and weighty locations.

Crown also got a mash-up of worn-out anecdotes from previously published memoirs written by his subordinates, from which Bush lifts quotes word for word, passing them off as his own recollections. He took equal license in lifting from nonfiction books about his presidency or newspaper or magazine articles from the time.

Anger at Amazon 'paedophile guide'

Amazon.com paedophile guide protestedAmazon has sparked outrage for selling a self-published digital book called The Pedophile's Guide to Love and Pleasure: A Child-Lover's Code of Conduct on its website. The reviews page for the "guidebook", available for Amazon's Kindle e-reader, were flooded with criticisms of the online retail company for offering it for sale.
